If you like berry and cream, the combination of avocado and berry in a salad sounds like a natural extension. Nevertheless, it’s a surprise to see avocado and strawberry on the same plate. When Dorie puts this recipe in Everyday Dorie, there is little doubt in my mind that it’d deliver.
In addition to avocado and strawberry, ruby red grapefruit is another star ingredient. Can’t say which one stands out more. Citrus, especially that in red, adds acidity and reinforces the bright red tone of this springlike salad. Doing double duty, the juice of the grapefruit makes its way into the vinaigrette. Remarkably, its slight bitterness jibes with the rest of the dressing ingredients: lime juice, sugar, extra-virgin olive oil and ground pepper. Simple, yet somewhat unexpected.
Can we call it a salad without the greens? Afterall, this is a red and green salad — at least in terms of the color tone. For the most part, these are eye-catching colors which capture your sight before you can make out the finer points of the salad. Beside providing a pop of vibrant green, the remaining greens to finish off the salad are: fresh jalapeño, cilantro and basil. They impart a touch of heat and an irresistible fragrance. Yes, like a bouquet of spring flowers, it’s hard to resist smelling it and admiring its ephemeral beauty.
